Gratitude

November 25, 2004

I was chattering to Mom on the phone, telling her what I was going to fix for supper, when I had a sudden thought. “You know,” I said, “It’s pretty good when you decide what to fix based on what’s taking up the most room in the freezer. That means you have plenty to eat.”

It’s been a rough year for me, but, as Thanksgiving rolls around, I find I have plenty to be grateful for. After almost a year, I finally have a job. It’s not exactly what I had in mind, and I have a long, hard stretch ahead of me with no insurance, a crazy schedule, and very little pay. But it’s almost enough, and, if it’s almost enough, I can somehow manage to make it be enough. I still won’t have any of the nice things I’ve yearned for, but I will survive.

I have been unable to afford the food I wanted to eat, but I have never gone hungry.

My car desperately needs work done, but somehow it stays running.

I have no insurance, but I have managed to stay healthy.

I haven’t been able to buy luxuries, but I have a roof over my head, and lights and heat.

I have accomplished very little of what I’ve wanted to accomplish, but I’ve been given a year with lots of time for family, friends, and my pets.

And now I have a job where I truly make a difference.

Yes, I have a lot to be thankful for this year. Happy Thanksgiving!
